From a real fact, Jean Harambat creates from scratch a story of a crazy inventiveness and realizes a hilarious and fanciful pastiche of three protagonists: the actors David Niven, Peter Ustinov and Clifton James.
It is, according to an idea of Winston Churchill, to recruit and form a look-alike (Meyrick Edward Clifton James) to play the role of General Montgomery - the general of the allied forces, then monitored by the Nazis - and thus mislead the enemy as to the actual location of the Landing. At the same time, while the English capital undergoes the Blitz, life unfolds in the cabarets where officiates a poisonous - and nevertheless charming - young woman, Vera.
This burlesque story where nothing is entirely true or entirely false is also a tribute to the cinema, especially to the "sophisticated comedy" of the 1930s and 1940s, with a dynamism, a sense of appropriateness and a flow of dialogues. (Lubitsch was the master)!
