Description: Video recordings of lecture given by Professor Catford on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Michigan Linguistics Department, in a series called 'The Catford Lectures'. The subject of the lectures was Professor Catford's life in linguistics. The lectures were introduced by Linguistics Professor Alton Becker and are a linguistic autobiography. In the eighth lecture, from April 18, 1985, Catford continues talking about the School of Applied Linguistics and also discusses how he came to the University of Michigan in 1964 as director of the English Language Institute and professor of linguistics and became involved with the Center for Research in Language and Language Behavior. He also gives criticism of transformational grammar.
